According to the report, from 2006 to 2024, more than 1,700 journalists have been killed worldwide, and 85 percent of the cases related to these murders have been closed without any legal process.
The second day of November is the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, and this year’s anniversary coincides with the presentation of the UNESCO Secretary General’s biennial report on the safety of journalists in the world and the issue of impunity. According to these reports, in the last two years, we have seen a 38% increase in cases of crimes against journalists compared to the previous reporting period.
On the other hand, Antonio Guterres, the Secretary General of the United Nations, in his message on the occasion of this international day, pointed out that Gaza had the highest number of journalists and members of the media killed in any war in the last decade and called on all governments to take immediate steps. To protect journalists, investigate the crimes against them and punish the perpetrators of these crimes.
Melissa Fleming, head of the United Nations Global Communications Department, also stated that not issuing a permit for international journalists to enter Gaza is a further suffocation of the truth.
On the other hand, Sheikh Niang, director of the United Nations Committee for the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, said in a statement that over the past 380 days, more than 130 Palestinian journalists have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza. These people were the voices that could have reported possible war crimes but were silenced before their stories were fully told.
The publication of these reports and comments, although they are a welcome step and a step in confronting the war crimes of the Zionist regime, but we must also keep in mind that the reports of international organizations have been presented for years. Most of these reports are published on international registered days. But because of this, the publication of the report is stopped and practical measures are never taken in order to establish justice.
The reason is clear: international organizations are in the hands of politicians. This UN report is also focused on Gaza. Because the issue of Gaza has become a global matter and a popular demand among the nations of the world. But the Zionist regime’s crimes against journalists are not limited to Gaza. The Zionist regime also attacks journalists in Lebanon and seeks to silence the media voices of oppressed people in the world. On September 30, this regime bombed and destroyed the offices of Al-Sarat Lebanese TV channel in the southern area of Beirut. Also, it bombed and destroyed the office of al-Mayadeen TV channel in Beirut on October. This attack resulted in the martyrdom of one person and the injury of five people.
If there is to be a confrontation with impunity towards journalists in the world, it should not be mentioned only in Gaza. In Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and anywhere else that does not recognize the Zionist regime as an independent entity, crimes against journalists are committed by the Zionist regime and its friends.
Also, if the international organizations are looking for practical action against the commission of crimes against journalists in Gaza and Lebanon, etc., the first real international action could be the issuance of an arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court against Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Galant. Two war criminals of the Zionist regime.
But this goal will be forgotten, like other goals to prevent tyranny in the world. What will remain are the journalists whose names remain in the reports and the criminals who speak freely and proudly about their crimes in the world arena and on world stages.
