
According to ISNA, the SCO Regional Counter-Terrorism Structure announced that the member states of the organization call for the rapid ratification of the draft UN Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism.
According to RIA Novosti, the SCO affiliated body announced: “With the aim of further improving the global legislative framework, the SCO member states call for efforts to finalize the proposed document of the UN Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism.”
The Regional Counter-Terrorism Structure also called on UN member states to incorporate the provisions of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy into their national laws. This strategy was adopted by the UN General Assembly in September 2006.
The body noted in its statement: “Efforts to increase the effectiveness of international counter-terrorism cooperation under the leadership of the UN are of great importance for combating terrorist threats.”
The statement continued: “The SCO member states have been working on their domestic legislation in the field of counter-terrorism and adopting regulatory acts aimed at establishing rules to protect facilities vulnerable to terrorism.”
The SCO was founded in 2001. Its permanent members include Russia, China, India, Iran, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
