Belgium joins genocide case against Israel at International Court of Justice

Association for Defending Victims of Terrorism - Belgium has officially joined the case brought by South Africa against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for violating the Genocide Convention in Gaza.

According to IRNA , the International Court of Justice, which is based in The Hague, announced that Belgium submitted its request on December 23, citing Article 63 of the Court’s Statute.

Several countries, including Brazil, Colombia, Ireland, Mexico, Spain and Turkey, have already joined the case.

Article 63 of the Statute of the Court states that member states have the right to intervene in cases before the International Court of Justice.

Belgium emphasized that its intervention focused on Articles 1 to 6 of the Genocide Convention, in particular Article 2, concerning the interpretation of the “specific purpose” required for genocide.

The Court has invited South Africa and Israel to submit their written observations on the entry of Belgium, in accordance with Article 83 of the Rules of Court.

South Africa filed the case against Israel on December 29, 2023, accusing the regime of violating its obligations under the Genocide Convention in its actions against Palestinians in Gaza. Since then, the court has issued a series of interim measures and ordered Israel to take steps to prevent genocide.
