UNHCR reported in 10 may, 2019 that some 70 refugee of various nationalities drowned in coast of Tunisia. The boat, carried refugees from Côte d’Ivoire, Cameron, Senegal, Ghana, Mali and Bangladesh, left the Libya to Tunisia, in Thursday to reach Europe by the Mediterranean Sea, and ran into trouble during strong waves.
“This is a tragic and terrible reminder of the risks still faced by those who attempt to cross the Mediterranean,” said Vincent Cochetel, UNHCR Special Envoy for the Mediterranean.”
He added: “If we don’t act now, we’re almost certain to see more tragic events in the coming weeks and months.”
164 people died on the route between Libya and Europe in the first four months of 2019 and one person has died for every three that have reached European shores after departing from Libya. The UN reported that 6 refugees died every day in 2018 in the way to Europe by the Mediterranean Sea.
