Pope Francis, the leader of the world’s Catholics, died on Monday morning, May 1, 2021, after a long illness, at the age of 88.
The head of the world’s Catholics had condemned the war in Gaza during the Vatican’s Easter service and called for a ceasefire. Pope Francis called for a ceasefire in Gaza during a brief appearance before thousands of Catholics gathered in St. Peter’s Square for the Vatican’s open-air Easter service. In his message, Pope Francis referred to the suffering of the Palestinian people and also called for a ceasefire, opening the way for humanitarian aid and helping the hungry people of Gaza.
Before his recent five-week hospitalization in a Rome hospital, Francis had also strongly criticized the Israeli regime’s war in Gaza, calling the situation “very serious and shameful” in January.
