Tens of thousands of ISIS mercenaries disappeared in Syria
Association for Defending Victims of Terrorism - A US report has warned of the disappearance of 15,000 to 20,000 ISIS mercenaries and their families in Syria following security chaos and mass escapes from camps and prisons in the northeast of the country.

A report released by the US Inspector General for Operation Resolute Support has warned of serious security implications as thousands of ISIS mercenaries and their families escape camps and prisons in northeastern Syria.
The report states that between 15,000 and 20,000 people suspected of having links to ISIS disappeared or fled after the detention system collapsed in early 2026, which was the result of attacks by the Syrian interim government and the security vacuum in Rojava.
The report states that following smuggling operations and mass escapes of foreign women and children, the number of detainees in al-Hol camp has decreased from approximately 23,400 to less than 1,500.
The report also notes the escape of approximately 1,500 prisoners from al-Shaddadi prison during the Syrian interim government’s offensive on Rojava, warning that the resulting security vacuum has strengthened the ability of ISIS cells to reorganize.
After the elements of the hegemonic regime fail to achieve their goals in the region using the tools of war, the use of terrorist groups in the West Asian region will be on the agenda, and the revival of the ISIS terrorist group will be on the agenda of the hegemonic regime.
