UNITED NATIONS OFFICE OF COUNTER-TERRORISM AND UNIVERSITY OF MÁLAGA SIGN AGREEMENT TO COOPERATE ON COUNTER-TERRORISM RESEARCH

Association for Defending Victims of Terrorism – The United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) and the University of Málaga signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to partner in research development, delivery of training programmes, and knowledge-sharing to address the multifaceted challenges posed by terrorism and violent extremism.

The MoU establishes a framework for cooperation between both entities over the next four years and will be put into practice through a joint plan of action with specific activities and timelines.

As such, this includes identifying avenues for scholars and researchers from the University of Málaga to contribute their insights and expertise to the United Nations’ counter-terrorism efforts.

Mr. Vladimir Voronkov, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism and Mr. José Ángel Narváez Bueno, Rector of the University of Málaga, signed the agreement during a bilateral meeting at United Nations Headquarters.

“Partnerships with academia can foster greater advocacy for measures to counter terrorism and counter and prevent violent extremism, and serve as an example of a ‘whole-of-society’ approach. I look forward to the scientific and practical contribution from the University of Málaga,” said Under-Secretary-General Voronkov.

“The University of Málaga stands as a leader in cutting-edge technological research, particularly in Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, and advanced technologies. This valuable expertise has the potential to greatly benefit all Member States in advancing our collective efforts in counterterrorism,” stated Rector Narvaez of the University of Málaga.

The agreement with the University is a key component of UNOCT’s strategy to broaden its network of partnerships with academic institutions and external stakeholders.
