Opening of 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly

The Association for Defending Victims Terrorism – The 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly opened at the UN headquarters in New York with the presence of figures and officials of the states.

This meeting is the largest annual gathering of world leaders to exchange opinions and discuss the problems and challenges facing the world.

At the opening of this meeting, Antonio Guterres, the Secretary General of the United Nations, lamented that the world around us is in peril and paralyzed by political divides that were undermining the work of the United Nations Security Council, international law, trust and people’s faith in democratic institutions, and all forms of international cooperation. He said that the reality is that we live in a world where the logic of cooperation and dialogue is the only path forward.

Also, Mr. Guterres acknowledged about the harmful climate changes around the world that “But the poorest and most vulnerable – those who contributed least to this crisis – are bearing its most brutal impacts.” He further added that saving the earth, which is literally on fire, is one of the priorities of the world leaders in this summit, and warned that the world is in a very dangerous situation.

Csaba Kőrösi, the president of the general assembly, explained about the new slogan of this session of the meeting: “It is possible to find a solution through science, solidarity and sustainability. I have chosen this slogan for the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly. “We need solidarity because inequalities have reached record height… sustainability because we owe it to our children to leave behind a liveable world [and] science because it offers us neutral evidence for our actions.” He also emphasized the importance of international respect for the rule of law and warned that whenever human rights are threatened, it is a call for all of us to take action.

This session will continue until Monday, 26 September.

This meeting is the first in-person meeting after the Corona virus pandemic in the last three years, in which the leaders of more than 150 states give speeches, which shows that strengthening the United Nations in order to organize the chaotic situation in the world is still a priority of the international community.
