Stripping a Chechen jihadist of French citizenship who was the “emir” of a group in Syria

Association for Defending Victims of Terrorism – The French authorities stripped a Chechen of the citizenship he obtained in 2008. Years ago, he was the “emir” of a jihadi group in Syria. He is also accused of participating in battles and training jihadists to use explosives. At least twenty people were stripped of French citizenship between 2019 and 2023 due to terrorist acts, according to official figures.

According to a decree published in the Official Gazette on Wednesday, a Chechen was stripped of his French citizenship, which he obtained in 2008 and in 2013 and 2014 he was the “emir” of a jihadist group in Syria.

In 2019, the Special Criminal Court in Paris sentenced Hassan Bey Turchaev to ten years in prison, with a guarantee of serving two-thirds of the term.

During his trial, Al-Shishani admitted that he went to Syria, where he stayed for three months in 2013 and 2014. But he said that he went to this country in search of his brothers and “not to fight.”

He is accused of participating in battles and training jihadists to use explosives. He is also suspected of being the “emir” of a jihadi group in the Caucasus Emirate affiliated with Ahrar al-Sham, which is under the banner of the “Islamic Front.”

Hassanbek Torshayev, now 53 years old, grew up in Grozny, Chechnya. He was forced to flee his country because of the war and seek asylum in France. As of 2005, the intelligence services monitored him because of his religious extremism. He considers himself a Salafist.

Between 2019 and 2023, at least twenty people were stripped of their citizenship in France due to terrorist acts, according to official figures.

The decision to withdraw citizenship may be taken in the event of a violation of the fundamental interests of the nation or in the event of conviction for committing a terrorist act. The order only includes dual nationals not born in France, and this is done by decree.

The controversial immigration law, adopted by Parliament in December, extends the scope of the measure to include dual nationals convicted of premeditated murder against any person subject to public authority.
