The Syrian man, identified only as “Issa,” is charged with 10 counts of attempted murder and membership in a foreign terrorist organization, the Islamic State group, according to Euronews.
Three people died in the attack on a festival in the western German city of Solingen on August 23.
In court, the suspect, whose last name was not disclosed due to German privacy laws, admitted responsibility for the attack.
He also expressed remorse, saying he killed “innocent people” and not “infidels” as he had thought.
He added that he was ready to accept any sentence. “I have committed a grave sin and I am ready to accept the sentence,” he said in a statement released through his lawyers.
Nine months ago, the defendant attacked people with a knife at a festival in the town of Solingen, near Düsseldorf. Federal prosecutors have charged him with three counts of murder and ten counts of attempted murder.
In Germany, murder charges can carry a life sentence. The trial is due to continue until the end of September at the Düsseldorf state court.
