Amnesty International Strongly Criticizes Friedrich Mertz for Inviting Netanyahu
Association for Defending Victims of Terrorism - Amnesty International criticized the German chancellor candidate for inviting the Israeli Prime Minister to Berlin, calling it a violation of international law.

According to ISNA, Amnesty International, the human rights organization, strongly criticized Friedrich Mertz, the leader of the Christian Democratic Union party in Germany, who is the main candidate for chancellor in the country, in a statement for inviting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Berlin, writing: Not a good start as the future Chancellor: On the eve of the Bundestag elections, Friedrich Mertz is apparently inviting Benjamin Netanyahu to Germany, whose arrest warrant has been issued by the International Criminal Court.
Amnesty International went on to describe the move as a “blatant call” to violate the law and stressed that the new German government must respect international law and human rights institutions for a foreign policy without double standards.
According to the Anadolu Agency, the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office announced on Monday that Meretz would invite Netanyahu for an official visit to Germany.
The winning candidate in the German parliamentary elections also told a press conference in Berlin that he had assured Netanyahu that he would find ways and means to allow him to travel to Germany without the risk of arrest.
“I think the idea that the Israeli Prime Minister cannot visit the Federal Republic of Germany is completely absurd,” he said.
The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Netanyahu and former Minister of War Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity during the Gaza war, which has killed more than 48,300 people since October 2023.
