According to Mehr News Agency, citing Al-Ma’alumah, former US ambassador to Damascus Robert Ford emphasized in a press conference that the US and Europe indirectly played a role in pushing Abu Muhammad Al-Julani, the leader of the terrorists ruling the Levant, from the terrorist field to the political field.
He added that a European team was selected by a non-governmental organization with his participation and began its activities to transfer him to the world of politics in 2023, when Al-Julani was still the leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham in Idlib.
Ford added that his first meeting with Al-Julani was in March 2023 and then in September. The third meeting also took place inside the Syrian presidential palace. Al-Julani came to power at the request of the US and Europe, taking advantage of the protests against Bashar al-Assad.
These remarks are the first official admission by a former American official that Western parties played a role in placing a terrorist in power in Syria.
